COURSE INFORMATION The programme consists of 8 compulsory and 2 elective modules for Full time (1 year) training. Part time (2 years) students need to take two extra English modules of ELF 1 and 2. COMPULSORY MODULES
1. English Language Framework Level 3 (ELF3) aims to provide students with a basic ability to function as independent users of English. Both factual and less familiar situations will be introduced to assist students with communicating beyond their immediate context.
2. English Language Framework Level 4 (ELF 4) aims to develop students into fully independent users of English. It aims to systematically improve their ability across the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as ensuring familiarity with, and accurate use of, a broad range of grammar and vocabulary items.
3. English Language Framework Level 5 (ELF 5) aims to create an opportunity for non-native speakers of English to perform on an equal level to native speakers in both academic and professional environments.
4. Study and Communication Skills equips students with the essential study skills needed to succeed in university. Students will learn to critically reflect and analyse their own study habits and identify ways to improve. They will learn the basic skills necessary to cope with lectures, conduct independent research, write academic papers and give formal oral presentations.
5. Culture Studies helps define and describe the concept of culture, enabling the students to analyse and gain awareness of their own and other cultures. Students will learn about various features of a foreign country and its culture, with a particular focus on student life and studying abroad.
6. Mathematical Techniques develops basic mathematical competence and confidence so that mathematics can be deployed in later years of study and also in the modules that contain quantitative materials at this level of study.
7. IT Skills provides students with a basic introduction to IT skills that will be required in their studies. Students will learn basic skills in using word processors, spreadsheets and presentation software. The module will focus on the Microsoft Office suite.
8. IELTS Preparation prepares students for the IELTS assessment. This module focusses purely on the examination technique required to perform well in the test.
ELECTIVE MODULES (*)
1. Introduction to Computing introduces a range of Computing and IT topics. The module covers components and organisation of computer systems, the relationship between hardware and software, applications of computers, databases, networking (with a focus on the Internet), graphics and multimedia.
2. Programming provides extensive practice in the modern programming language ‘Visual Basic 2008 Express’ to illustrate classic programming principles.
3. Introduction to Business gives students an introduction to the purpose, types and organisation of businesses.
4. Accounting and Economics presents an introduction to the key principles of Accounting and Economics. It is designed for students who have never studied business subjects before and who may not be native speakers of English.
*Only 2 of the 4 elective modules above need to be chosen.
